Taurine (Free-Form) Non GMO 500mg
Non-Medicinal Ingredients: Rice Flour & Gelatin (capsule)
Taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid that is not utilized for protein synthesis, but is mainly found free in most tissues, especially throughout the nervous system, muscles and heart where it is found in the highest quantity of any amino acid. It functions in tissues by stabilizing cell membranes, aiding the transport of potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium in and out of cells. Taurine helps to generate and regulate nerve impulses and supports the maintenance of normal fluid balance; it is also used by the body in visual pathways, as well as in the brain and nervous system, where it works together with glycine and GABA as a neurotransmitter.
Research shows how critical taurine is to full health, as it’s involved in many actions to aid and protect a variety of organs, such as brain, eye, heart, and liver. Taurine deficiencies are implicated in neurological, cardiovascular, renal, diabetic, osteoblast (bone), and retinal dysfunction. Beta-agonist drugs cause a reduction in the body pool of taurine.
Component of skeletal muscle – so fish and meat supply significant taurine. Meat-restricted diets result in very low taurine intake, but can be synthesized from cysteine when vitamin B6 is adequate. The mean daily intake from omnivore diets around 58 mg (range from 9 to 372 mg) and to be low or negligible from a strict vegan diet. Requirements for optimal human function are quite significant, especially in certain disease states, making taurine a conditionally essential nutrient.
Makes up 1% of total body weight, more than 50% of the total free amino acid content of the heart, and its concentration in the brain is only exceeded by glutamic acid. Most plentiful of all amino acids in retina, and involved in protection of retina structure and functions. Heart and brain cells require taurine for intracellular retention of calcium, magnesium and potassium. Taurine has been successful in treating congestive heart failure, and is implicated in night blindness, arrhythmia, angina, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis.
Taurine is a cardiotonic, antiarrhythmic, chronotropic, and reduces blood pressure. Also plays a modulatory role in central respiratory control in acute hypoxia. It helps relieve the heavy heart-beat some people may feel at times when lying on the left side.
Taurine stimulated alkaline phosphatase activity as well as collagen synthesis in osteoblast cells.
Enhances the digestion of fats by accelerating the smooth flow of bile. Involved in bile acid production and prevents bile malfunctions and related disease like cholestasis. All these actions reduce cholesterol level, and help prevent atherosclerosis.
Cysteine supplementation results in normalization of plasma taurine concentrations in children receiving home parenteral nutrition. Taurine is important during mammalian development, especially for cells of the cerebellum (motor control) and retina. Taurine also speeds up the brain's development. Believed to act as neurotransmitter or modulator, its derivative glutaurine, a peptide, seems to acts as neurotransmitter.
Taurine plays numerous roles in the brain, e.g. anticonvulsant, modulation of neuronal excitability, learning and memory processes, anti-aggressive, and many others. Taurine deficiency has been linked to development of epilepsy and taurine supplementation has effective inhibitory effect, but because of poor liposolubility a large quantity for much longer duration is required. Taurine and its derivative calcium homo taurate are used as an anti-alcoholic.
Taurine also stabilizes platelets against aggregation, making it critical to the prevention of embolisms and strokes. Subjects with normal taurine status show increased resistance to platelet aggregation by 30 to 70% when supplemented with taurine at 400 or 1,600 mg/d, respectively.
