Taurine

Taurine

Taurine is a conditionally essential amino acid that is not utilized for protein synthesis, but is mainly found throughout the nervous system, muscles and heart.

Research shows how critical taurine is to full health, as it’s involved in many actions to aid and protect a variety of organs, such as brain, eye, heart, and liver.

It makes up more than 50% of the total free amino acid content of the heart, and its concentration in the brain is only exceeded by glutamic acid. Most plentiful of all amino acids in retina, and involved in protection of retina structure and functions. Heart and brain cells require taurine for intracellular retention of calcium, magnesium and potassium.

Taurine is a cardiotonic, antiarrhythmic, chronotropic, and reduces blood pressure. Also plays a modulatory role in central respiratory control in acute hypoxia. It helps relieve the heavy heart-beat some people may feel at times when lying on the left side.
